RECIPE

Southern Fried Chicken

Ingredients:

  • 4 lbs chicken pieces (thighs, drumsticks, wings)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and hot sauce. Add the chicken pieces to the bowl, making sure they are well coated in the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  2. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, basil, salt, and pepper.
  3. Heat 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven to 350°F.
  4. Remove the chicken pieces from the marinade, letting any excess drip off, and coat each piece in the flour mixture, making sure it is well coated on all sides.
  5. Carefully place the coated chicken pieces in the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for 8-10 minutes on each side, or until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through to an internal temperature of 165°F.
  6. Remove the chicken from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Repeat with remaining chicken pieces.
  7. Serve the fried chicken hot and enjoy!
